Getting My Wonk On Charm Pack Style

Getting my wonk on?!  Jayne at Twiggy and Opal shared a beautiful quilt recently.  It was a polka-dotted baby quilt, and y’all know I have a weakness for all dots.  She also shared a tutorial on how to make a wonky block the easy way and I shared that link above.  Unwittingly, she pretty much twisted my arm and forced me to get my own wonk on.

Random Wonk

I have a huge issue with random and quite possibly wonky wonk as well.  There has to be some control involved – we can’t just go willy nilly cutting and sewing without regard to anything.  I can’t do it!  I just can’t!  Once I calmed down at the willy nilly thought, a small project was born.  There’s no rule that my wonk has to be a king-size quilt, right?!  Ready to give this a try with me or is this old hat to you?  Jayne’s tutorial uses charm packs . . . we have a kazillion of those nicely stacked in the closet.  Remember the lightbox incident – yeah we don’t need to revisit that, but the charm packs are much easier to access.

Charming Wonk

Sue gave me a few charm packs to choose from and I selected ABC Animals.  Each of the 42 charm squares needed to be sashed on all four sides.

Once they were all sashed and pretty, it was time to start trimming in a wonky way.  Rather than following Jayne’s method exactly I elected to put the tape reminders on my ruler.  The photo on the left shows the tape at 7.5″ in both directions, while the right photo shows the first wonky trim.

The next cuts really use the taped marks to ensure that you get a block that is 7.5″ square yet has a wonky wonk style.

Here are just two of the trimmed blocks although they don’t look all that wonky, do they?!  Well, on second thought maybe they do . . .

Wonky Wonk Layout

Before long all 42 squares were trimmed and laid out on the design wall.  I remembered to take a photo at one point although I cannot promise this is the final layout.

I sure do enjoy all of these different fabrics . . . one of the delightful things about a charm pack is the selection of fabrics.  A good mix and yet they all coordinate and play nicely together and with each other.

Wonk Wonky Quilt Top

In spite of having very little motivation lately, a wonk quilt top has emerged.

It seems as if I can only read SO much, and watch TV only SO much.  One may as well sew, right?!  Now the BIG question arises . . . how should it be quilted?!

I do like a bit of wonky wonk, but it all gets a bit regular when I try it. This is a fun mini quilt

It’s fun to play with bright fabrics and do something different. I can’t do wonky either, I’m too ordered. So congrats on working outside of your comfort zone to make something fun.

I have to laugh at your stress at being wonky, I would have a hard time too!! It would end up being the most controlled wonk ever! Adorable top though.

How dull our lives would be if everything was just 90 degrees and straight edges! Thank goodness for the charming wonkiness. Absolutely adorable!!!

    Roseanne,
your wonky wonk charm pack squares are great … at first, I was afraid that you’d be cutting up those cute charm squares … what a relief it was to see that only the sashing / borders was cut wonky! It’s perfect!
As for quilting – anything will go – except for a straight cross hatch … but you could do some wonky quilting … a little star here, a loop d-loop there, a little bit of a loose feather in another spot, with a swirl and a heart somewhere else … like I said, anything goes!
    Happy Quilting! 🙂

  9. That’s a really cute charm pack and just perfect for your subtle wonk design.

I’ve never gotten my wonky on, Roseanne! One day I will. Love your wonky quilt. It looks like a very fun, though somewhat stressful process for those who find it difficult to make wonky work!! Have a great week!
