Fun-Strip Quilt Tutorial

Here is another jelly roll-friendly quilt tutorial called Fun-Strip Quilt.  This one is by Quilting by Fiona and is an easy or beginner level.

Fun-Strip

The needed materials for this quilt are simple:

  • 20 – 2.5″ strips
  • 30 – 1.5″ strips (background fabric)
  • fabric for binding and backing
  • finished size is 40″ x 52″
  • Six rows by eight rows

The basic steps are sew together five alternating strips starting with the 1.5″ strip.  Be sure you ALTERNATE the direction in which you sew the strips.  I usually sew strip 1 and 2 together, and feed in strips 4 and 5.  Then you can snip the thread from 1-2, flip it to the opposite end to add strip 3.  If you are doing several blocks at one time it is easy to keep all five strips together using this method.

PRESS the seams in one direction.  You can press between the addition of strips or when all are complete.  Measure your block size – measure several blocks and take the smallest size.  Trim your blocks if you need to.  In her tutorial, her strip set measured 7.25″.  Whatever size your set measures, cut the long strip into that same size to make a square block.

Once you have all the blocks made, sew together by alternating the direction with six per row.  Then sew all eight rows together, layer, quilt and bind.  Since you only use 20 jelly roll strips you should have enough leftover to make another quilt!

Fun-Strip An Alternative Look

Look how different the quilt looks by using different background fabrics!  Amazing.  I like both variations.  We rarely use a dark background but I am tempted to try this one.  If you do try this tutorial share a picture on our Facebook page or on Instagram #homesewnbyus.  We would love to see it! ~smile~

Hi Alycia! I agree. It would go on my to-do list if it wasn’t a little long in the tooth already. HAHA Maybe soon . . . I think optimistically ~smile~ Roseanne

  1. I really like the version with the black strips. Those brights just pop!

      Hi Kathy,
I agree – the black version really sets off those colors. Makes me want to get in my sewing room and push aside those other projects. ~smile~ Roseanne
