Finished T-Shirt Quilt for Pat

We stretched out a bit from our usual baby quilt box this year.  Technically, last year as well because we made five queen size quilts for our peeps.  Of course, not much tops my Postcard quilt in my book.  Even when I say I love a quilt and can’t part with it like Bubbles, it’s not as great as the afore mentioned Postcard.  In March, Pat asked us if we would make her a t-shirt quilt using her collection from diving.  Of course I said yes.  I really can’t ever say no – just ask Sue.

Devising a T-shirt Layout

We set about looking at the shirts and coming up with a layout for the potential quilt.  Pat gave us free reign thankfully and we just ran with it, choosing what we thought looked best.  Here is our first layout, cut from Excel boxes to match the t-shirt sizes.  That didn’t last long because I didn’t mark which was the width/length so that was a little frustrating for Sue.  Oops!  I am sorry even though I was laughing about it for quite a while.  She forgave me.

Cutting those t-shirts apart was SCARY.  There’s no turning back now . . .

We Got Past the Wrong Measurements

After much debate and plenty of remeasuring, we came up with a ‘final’ layout.  We decided that we weren’t going to add a border to each t-shirt, but rather to just those that needed it to even out the sizing.  We got all the rows together, and had to rip off the fifth row because the two Dive, Dive, Dive Nassau shirts were too close together.  Here is the t-shirt flimsy prior to quilting.

It was time to pick out the perfect backing, one that would represent the pretty blue waters of the Caribbean.  We thought this fit the ticket very well.

T-shirt Quilting

Once the perfect backing was in-house, it was time to layer it up, pin and get started on quilting.  We elected to use a 80/20 batting between the interfaced t-shirts and backing.  The quilting pins came out (picture one), the walking foot went on along with some blue Gutermann thread and quilting commenced (picture two).  Following the masking tape set on the diagonal for the first row and then spacing out the next about every two inches, quilting went quickly.

Our friend, Pat received her t-shirt quilt recently and love it.  I think her face pretty much sums it up for her and us.  Her smile makes me ~smile~.
