Doll Quilts for A Doll Like Me

In February, Bernie from Needle and Foot Fine Fabrics shared some information about a very worth cause.  Please check out the link for wonderful details!  The Spread the Love, Quilting for Kids campaign was started and it spread like wildfire throughout the quilting community.  I somehow missed the initial posts but thankfully I saw some of the follow up posts.  Let me share a few of the details with you, and how we are becoming involved.

Quilting for Kids – Doll Quilts Campaign

In a nutshell, the Spread the Love, Quilting for Kids campaign asked quilters to make doll quilts.  The doll quilts are to be sent to A Doll Like Me which makes diverse dolls for both boys and girls.  The child who receives the doll make need some comfort after surgery, or they may be facing cancer treatments and can use the companionship of a doll to share secrets with. When available, a quilt is sent along with the dolls.  Bernie found out that often there are no quilts to send along because the stock is low.  So she asked the quilting community if they would be willing to make a quilt or two (or more).  Needless to say, the response has been tremendous.  The doll quilts are being sent to New Berlin, Wisconsin which is very close to us!  About 30 to 40 minutes away from us at the most.

AW FMQ Challenge

I have been recently following along with Anglea Walters FMQ Challenge on Facebook and YouTube.  I didn’t want to start a new quilt to practice these techniques on, and had considered placemats.  After seeing a few of the doll quilts on many posts from friends’ blogs, and an email exchange with Tish of Tish’s Adventures in Wonderland a light bulb went on.  Rather than placemats why not make doll quilts?!?  For a wonderful cause and it would let me practice my FMQ on pint sized quilts.

Possible Doll Quilt Fabrics

Soon you will see some boyish doll quilts that I’ll be working on next week.  Perhaps some of the blues from the Regatta will make a good boy doll quilt.  Perhaps some of the extra charms from Dominic’s baseball quilt will make a good boy doll quilt.  I am sure we can come up with a few ideas.  We are going to shoot for 21″ x 24″ doll quilts as the dolls are about 18″ tall (similar to an American Girl doll).  We want them to be generous enough for the dolls to be warm and comfortable.  Soon I’ll share some practice quilting on these doll quilts.

  1. What a wonderful way to make something that will mean so much to a child (and a doll) in need AND get a chance to practice some free motion quilting. Win-Win!

  2. Roseanne, What a great way of practicing! I sure you will master both of the projects with enthusiasm and skill! Please share photos of the quilts that you make! 🙂
