Commissioned Dr Seuss Quilt Finished

****Updated note at the bottom of this post from Keri*****  Please read all the way to the bottom for the fabulous back story. ~smile~ Roseanne

How is it Friday already and time for a finish to share?!  I am very happy to report that we finished the Dr. Seuss quilt for Keri F.  She is a good friend of our almost-daughter, Lauren.  They both live in Texas, way too far away from us but not too far to send a squishy quilt.  Dr. Seuss is one of Keri’s favorite authors, and Lauren showed her the baby quilt we had made almost a year ago.  Keri asked if we would be willing to make another one, perhaps bigger than a baby quilt.  Once we worked out the details, and with the holidays were behind us, we set to work.

Keri-Seuss1

I shared most of our updates on Instagram and Facebook because Keri would see those almost immediately.  Our first step was to cut the preprinted book covers and characters into one standard size.  Next, we put them on our design wall (part of an ABC quilt is still hogging that left corner) until we had a pleasing layout.

Seuss Sashing

The next step was to attach the black sashing that surrounded each block, and that went on fairly quickly.  This quilt has three borders completing its good looks, and here is a shot of two of them:

Seuss Two Borders

The second border is comprised of all Dr Seuss titles in multicolored print.  Some of those titles include The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who!, Green Eggs and Ham, and Fox in Socks.  Before the reveal and after quilting, the final step was sewing down the binding by hand which Sue quickly completed:

Seuss Binding

This binding shot gives a good look at the backing fabric which is a polka dot Cat in the Hat Spotlight.  After a run through the washer and dryer, I sent Keri an email telling her the quilt was ready for its new home.

Dr Seuss Reveal

Dr Seuss Complete

Here is the finished quilt hanging on our closet on hangers!  It measures approximately 47″ x 61″ after it’s washing.  I am hoping that Keri will send us a picture of her with her new quilt when she receives it.  She has some special plans for the photo shoot – I know you will want to see it!  Sue had a hard time holding up the quilt – she said come on, her arms were getting tired!

Dr Seuss finished

Amazingly enough, this is a finish for our January OMG already!

Elm Street Quilt – January OMG Finish!

I never expected to have this finished in the first half of January.  It is also the first item on our UFO list working towards our PHD with Gail!  I will have to link up this post at the end of the month for the OMG finish on Elm Street Quilts.

Note from Keri:  I cannot believe you finished so quickly. I am IN LOVE with my quilt and I truly can’t wait to receive it!  Just to add on to this story for your lovely readers of how much this quilt means to me. My mom’s birthday is March 2nd (Dr. Seuss’ birthday) her name is Cindy Lou (yes, like in the Grinch, though it’s actually spelled differently), and she was a preschool teacher for a number of years so I’ve been around kids and Dr. Seuss books literally my whole life. I was raised on them myself. She’s got a collection of Dr. Seuss books and stuffed animals from her teaching days that is going to be passed on to me one day for my future kids, and so I’ve started a collection of my own. I’ve got a few books but I mostly collect Funko pops (since Mom has the books and stuffed animals covered). I’ve also even got a Dr. Seuss tattoo on my foot! So needless to say Dr. Seuss is a huge part of my life. But something extra special was missing for me to have as a family heirloom all my own. And when I saw that quilt on your Etsy page…made out of the actual book covers (not just random Seuss prints like every other blanket or quilt I’ve seen) I knew I had to have it. I actually teared up a bit out of excitement. So thank you for making this a literal dream come true for me. This quilt means more to me than you will ever know, and is truly something special. I can’t wait to take a picture with it once I receive it! 🙂
Holy cow!  Just an amazing way that quilts can touch someone’s life without us even knowing.  We are the lucky ones – both to make it for you, and to actually hear the back story.  ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. This is such a sweet sweet quilt with a wonderful story! Every quilt has a story and why not a story about stories of Dr. Seuss. I need to take more time to tell my quilt stories as I blog.

      Hello,
I agree – how many times do you get to here the impact a quilt might have on a recipient?! We are so blessed to have been a part of this story and to be able to share it. ~smile~ Roseanne

Wonderful quilt for a wonderful story. That was amazingly fast, but how terrific you could do that for her.

I’m looking at your lovely quilt and feeling bad that I never purchased the Dr. Seuss Book Cover fabric and then I saw it wasn’t fabric but actual book covers–very cool and I don’t feel so bad now. I do have some Dr. Seuss which has been sitting in my stash and one day when the granddaughter is old enough, I can make her a quilt with it. I love this quilt.

      Hi Rose,
I know it’s still out there – MSQC and Fat Quarter Shop for sure. I think I have enough of the covers, etc. to make one more baby quilt. After a break, and after the Regatta . . . maybe. I’m looking forward to seeing the Princess quilt for your little Princess. ~smile~ Roseanne

Oh that’s a gorgeous quilt and an even better story behind it – what an honour to make something that means so much to the recipient 🙂

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Carie,
I know, right?! I had no idea about the back story until today when Keri shared it. I am really honored – now I hope she loves it as much as I think she will. 😐 ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. Roseanne, you guys do such a wonderful job! The quilt looks so adorable. I’m certain they will fall in love with it the minute they open the package. Great job! 🙂

      Hi Keri,
OMG – this is just sooooo cool. I hope everyone reads this comment. I’m going to copy it and update the post. Or I can wait for your photos . . . . . . . . oh, what to do, what to do. I’ll wait for the photos. No, I’ll do both! ~smile~ Roseanne

Love this quilt! You guys are moving very, very fast…….SLOW DOWN…..you’re making me look bad! Ha!

    • Roseanne says:

      Shannon!
HAHAHAHAHAHA! That’s it. That’s all I’ve got for the rest of the month. The Regatta is barely started and I don’t care. You could never look bad in my eyes. May I remind you of a certain Postcard Quilt?!! That IS getting finished this year, oh Queen of the Quilts Shannon. ~smile~ Roseanne

  9. Vicki in MN says:

You gals are on a roll-keep it going!! Does Sue get all the binding work?

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Vicki,
Well, that roll is about to stop. HAHA! No, Sue doesn’t get all the bindings but she is super duper fast at them. I love doing it but I am pokey, so when something needs to get in the mail she’s our go-to gal. She got it all finished in one evening!! ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. Gretchen says:

Very pretty quilt, how wonderful you’ve already crossed off a OMG off the list!

    • Roseanne says:

      Hi Gretchen,
I have never completed a quilt so quickly. Nose to the grindstone, I guess. HAHA! ~smile~ Roseanne
