Clark, Junior Baby Quilt Finished

Just as soon as William and Nicole announced they were expecting a baby who is due in mid-March, Sue and I had our charge.  The gender of the baby didn’t matter one iota.  We had to make a Clark, Junior baby quilt for this baby.  Both parents are Cubs fans, and William has an adult version of Clark.  It was so exciting to see the gender reveal following the baseball theme.  Yup, that is the remnants of the snow we received on Halloween but Wilbur (he has many nicknames!) still managed to wear shorts.  Nicole pitched the loaded ball to him and they both found out we’re expecting a boy!

Its a boy

Last minute edit and note:  Clark is the name of the Cubs cub pictured inside the “C” logo.  The baby isn’t going to be named Clark, although that’s a very nice name!  I don’t think William thought of it . . . ~big grin~

Clark, Junior in the Beginning

Honestly, we made Wilbur’s quilt in 2017 and it was well before Nicole was on the scene.  He imagined a Cubs decor throughout the house, I suspect.  While there’s nothing wrong with that, the overall Cubs decor was admonished to the basement, office and ONE spare bedroom when they married.  That spare bedroom was destined to become the baby’s room with lots of care and thought given to making it just perfect.  Meanwhile, Sue and I prepared for little Clark, Junior.  The perfect fabrics were purchased and most importantly, the original pattern was found!  PHEW!

No one would guess that the red, white, and blue strips being ironed would end up as Clark, Junior.  At least we hoped not!  We heard from his sister and Mom that he would relish a smaller version of his quilt.

Clark, Junior Appliqué

It takes a bit to trace and then appliqué the small pieces that make up this baby quilt.  Once the baby shower date was set for February 8th, we knew we had a hard deadline.  Deadlines, especially close looming ones, make us work harder and better.  Appliqué began in earnest and a photo shared on IG as no one could possibly guess this was Clark, Junior-to-be.

Clark, Junior Borders & Quilting

Once appliqué was complete, borders were added with an extra one at each end to make a rectangle shape.  Red, white, and blue colors could be just about anything at this point.  Then we found this backing – a Disney MLB Cubs design that is just beyond perfecto for a wee one.

Even my favorite crosshatch quilting design seemed destined ideal for this quilt as it represents the baseball diamond.  Baby Dominic always tried to pick up these diamond shapes – maybe the new baby will imitate his cousin.

Clark Jr Backing

We added a nice royal blue binding and called it a day.  After washing and checking out the quilty squishiness, it was deemed ready to be the backdrop at the baby shower.  With plenty of time to ready his slow-pitch, that darn pentagon ball was also shared at the shower just for William.  He wanted to whip it at his sister but thankfully, he refrained.

Shower Shots!

The baby shower was fun and they received some fabulous gifts.

Nicole received some sage advice from Maddie about passies – they are NOT called nooks.  Please, brush up on the lingo while you still have six week to go, Nicole.

Gluten-free and traditional cupcakes were just a small portion of the goodies enjoyed by all.  Finally, Nicole shared the cute giraffe wearing glasses.  Come on, how cute is that?!!

I’m pretty sure Nicole took a short nap when they got home.  Then, she started looking at all the cool loot they received, piece by piece . . .  We can’t wait to meet this new baby.

  6. PERFECTION. Everything about this story makes me smile. It even reminded me that my 15-year-old used to call his pacifier his “nee-nee,” and we never figured out why. Congratulations on a fabulous finish, and thanks for linking up to What I Made Monday!
