Buttercream Twist Quilt Tutorial

I found this tutorial for a quilt called Buttercream Twist by Kim Diehl.  She designed the tutorial and it is shared courtesy of Martingale.  If you click here you find the instructions for the quilt as well as an extra tidbit for a candle mat.

Here is a close up of two of her blocks that finish at 10″ x 10″.  It is strips sewn together – yay!  One of my favorite, quick ways to put together a quilt top.  The center squares are 2.5″ strips so if you have a jelly roll hanging out waiting to be used you only need 12 strips this size.  The other two strips are 3.5″ and 5.5″ by the width of the fabric.  You’ll need 12 of each of those too.  Kim’s quilt uses 1/3 yard of 12 assorted prints but you could certainly use less – or even just one for a monochrome effect.

Sewn the two wider matching strips to each side of the center 2.5″ strip, and press.  Kim suggests pressing to the middle to make the center square stand out more, but I almost always press to the darker fabric.  Cut the lengths into 2.5″ wide sections – you will need 5 for each block, and 36 total blocks.  These sections will be easy to chain sew together and the 36 blocks will come together quickly.  Once all the blocks are made, lay them out 6 by 6 in alternating directions in a pleasing pattern.  Sew each row together and then the rows to each other.  Quilt, bind, enjoy!

The candle mat uses up the leftover 2.5″ cut sections for a multicolor scrappy look with only 4 squares sewn together.  I like the mix and match look that this creates as well:

That may be another option for the large quilt – instead of choosing five matching segments for each block, you could mix and match them for a scrappy look overall.  Would you like to make this quilt?  I would love to hear about it and see them when they’re finished if you do!
