Bringing a Vision to Life

Our niece, Andrea and her husband, Chris are expecting their first baby in just a few short months.  Once they announced they were pregnant, Andrea asked us to make her a quilt.  She had a vision in her head, and she wanted us to bring it to life in fabric.  She wanted to do the baby’s room in gray and white.  Polka dots on one wall and an elephant theme.  Not lots of elephant – just one in the center of a quilt.  Here is a peek at Baby J’s crib and dotted wall:

Okay.  There are lots of shapes of elephants out there.  Have you ever looked at clip art or images of elephants?  There are LOTS!  Here is our muse:

He is a cute little guy.  Smiling, with a balloon but (gasp) he has blue ears.  Nope, we cannot have that.  How about if the ears are green instead?  And how about three balloons in primary colors?  So, we drafted/sketched out a design.  I wanted to do piano keys around the edge in one border but that got vetoed.  How about prairie points instead?  Nope.  Thankfully, the green fabric we found has a cute dotted print on it.  I shared the fabrics with you a while back but here they are again, including the backing fabrics:

And here’s a close up of how cute Ellie’s fabric (Grunge) is just perfect for a little elephant with all the different colors within it:

I shared pictures with you as the quilt took shape, but once we got it all together and approved by both parents it was time to fly.  And so it was layered, basted and lovingly quilted.  We chose a straight cross-hatch pattern of an inch in width in both directions.

Once that was finished it was time for the binding and BOOM.  Done.   It will be washed once we get some Dreft.   With time to spare since the baby shower isn’t until July – there is plenty of time to get those cute storage cubes made too!  Now I just have to figure which materials to use . . . so many choices. ~smile~  In theory, the baby will have two quilts to chose from for his Meme.  Andrea called her quilt from her grandmother Meme, and would stand by it on the clothes line when it was time to be washed. ~smile~  I think the baby’s Meme has already been decided for him/her.
