Best Wishes and Good Luck to Maile

This post is a bit off-topic as far as quilting goes, but I’ll bring it back around in the end as a wrap-up.  My friend and coworker, Maile, is leaving for a new job.  We wish her well and all the happiness in the world.  At least, the nice side of me does.  The other side of me is crying big hard tears and possibly wailing.

Journey Thank You

Maile for a Reason

Friends come into your life for a reason.  Maile has brought a great vibe to my workplace, as well as great ideas.  Sometimes I think we are sisters from different the same mother as our paths have taken very similar paths.  We both lived in L.A. for a bit, shopped at the same Farmer’s Market, and worked near the same stomping grounds.  Her kids have a place in my heart, and this picture with her new (at the time) puppy named Bowie sums up more things we have in common.

Maile for a Season

When Maile started, I just knew our time together would be short.  I didn’t know how much time there would be, but I needed to enjoy each and every minute.  Oh yeah, and most importantly, don’t get attached.  The season lasted four years and they were four great years.  We lasted through one very long school year with a supervisor that was so disorganized it drove us both NUTS.  Together, we got the office staff to start to realize the importance of recycling, a passion we both share.   Another fun thing we tried is the winter science experiments like Gerber daisies or more recently the mum’s that are flourishing outside my garage right now.

Maile Goodbye

I’m terrible with goodbyes of all sorts.  Funerals, of course – who can attend one without shedding tears?!  Retirement parties are avoided because I end up making the person sob cry, and it’s supposed to be a happy event.  Gatherings like today’s breakfast I would also skip for a plethora of reasons but mostly because I’m an ugly crier.  When thinking of what might be a good gift for Maile as a going-away present, I debated for a bit.  The easy way out would be a Target gift card in a nice Good Luck card.  The note would read “buy something nice for your new office and think of me.”  Easy peasy, right?!

But that’s not how I roll – no easy way for me or Sue.  We don’t know Maile’s color palette but she is repainting some bedrooms in the palest of gray or white.  So, we picked out a table runner that is fairly neutral.

Table Runner for Maile

Inside the Thinking of You card, with no mention of goodbye (!!), will include a fairly long note explaining some details about this runner.

For example, the peppermint candies that remind me so very much of my mom.  The dress with the apron is the very first block I tried quilting in an echo pattern, while the heart pocket carries loads of love.

Lots of thought went into selecting border choices and the gray didn’t win out – we chose navy instead.  Finally, this is the very first piece I did a boatload and TON of ruler work on.  Quilting angst is real and this table runner caused a LOT of it.

I hope Maile just adores her new job.

Also, I wish that Maile feels as valued and supported as she did in Glencoe.

Finally, I hope that Maile finds another good friend as I will miss her greatly.  ~smile~

  2. I recognize a few of those blocks. They are lovely. I am always amazed to see a pretty table with NO sewing items covering the top….doesn’t happen in my house. I know your friend will love the table runner.

  3. And I hope the two of you stay in touch even if miles separate you! What a lovely, thoughtful gift. I’m sure she’ll love it!

Roseanne – what a generous friend you are to make such a gift for Maile. In the same way it carried memories for you, and gave you a chance to think of your treasured relationship with her, I am sure she will look on it frequently with a smile on her face and warm memories of her time with you. A wonderfully inspiring post!
