A Whole Village Pumpkin Quilt Finished

Happy birthday, sweet baby Alice, who turns one today. To celebrate the event, a Pumpkin quilt has been made by a group of family members. The premise is “family coming together with the goal to make a festive birthday quilt for Alice.”  Of course, Sue and I made a few pumpkin blocks for sweet Alice.  The idea of a whole village of family members making these pumpkin blocks is just a fun one!

Pumpkin Fun!

Lauren, Alice’s mom, selected a pumpkin pattern by Cluck, Cluck, Sew.  It calls for 25 total blocks made in five different pumpkin styles.  I’ve shared this photo before, but I just adore this shot of Alice picking out her favorite fabric. ♥ Alice is fortunate to have several extended family members that sew/quilt and TWO grandmothers that quilt.  How lucky is that sweet girl?!!  Here she is trying to decide on her favorite block before they were shipped off to be sewn.

Grandma Rosalie put the quilt top together over Labor Day weekend, and a snazzy backing fabric was purchased.

The quilt top was enlarged a bit to 69″ x 86″.  That’s a whole lot of love in the quilt top with all the different pumpkins.  Ebb and Flow is the name of the dark green backing fabric that comes in 108″ width.

Pumpkin Quilting Choices

We raised our hands to offer to quilt this beauty right from the get-go.  Layering it on our island is a snap, and I didn’t even fret too much about how to quilt it.  Thanks to good blogging friends who share close up photos of their quilting, it was easy to decide on a quilting pattern.  Vicki at Vicki’s Crafts and Quilting unwittingly gave me the idea when she shared a finished table runner photo.

All-over quilting design on Vicki’s table runner

I loved the idea of an all-over leaf design with a few swirls thrown in wherever I feel like it.  After a little practicing with paper and pen, I started quilting from the center out to the edges.

Pumpkin Seeds of Goodness 

You will see all the different fabrics that were chosen for this quilt in these photos.  It was fun to examine them as I was quilting around the quilt top.

Pumpkin Fault Free

There were a few times of stress during the quilting of this pumpkin quilt.  I finished off a spool of thread and enjoyed a huge thread knot.  Adding Alice Amelia’s name to the quilt was important. I ended up stitching it from right to left which is not as easy as it seems!

Alice herself picked out an actual pumpkin at the farm, and I had to include that sweet decision!

You can imagine all the squishy goodness in this just-washed quilt before it was sent to my birthday buddy.
