2018 Fall Quilt Festival Entry – Nora’s Story

Hello!  We are excited to share our entry for the 2018 Fall Quilt Festival going on at Amy’s Creative Side blog.  We’ve had 27 quilty finishes so far this year, but the most recent one is very near and dear to our heart.  It’s a quilt for a recently-turned-six-year-old girl who lost her mom earlier this year.  We shared another article about this quilt earlier this month with details about the pattern we used.

Clothing Makes a Good Hug for Nora

Over Memorial Day weekend, a friend of ours told us about a little girl named Nora who had recently lost her mom.  She wanted to know if she could give us a couple boxes of mom’s clothes.  Would we please make a quilt from them?  Well, of course we would.  How could we not?!  So, Sue set to work washing, drying and sorting the clothing.  Some of it had sequins while others were crocheted and not suitable for a quilt.

Building A Quilt for Nora

You can see that Sue cut the clothing pieces into 3″ squares.  She then lined them with interfacing similar to what’s used on a t-shirt quit.  We laid out all the squares on our design wall, and I set to work sewing the rows together.

The background fabric was need once the basic heart shape was formed.  We found a nice soft beige with a swirly secondary pattern.  Let’s get this together and begin quilting!

Quilting a Heart for Nora

A crosshatch design using my walking foot is the quilting pattern chosen for this nearly square quilt.  A pretty, deep royal purple fabric was used as the backing fabric and binding.  It pulled the many different shades of purple found in mom’s clothes.

We will probably never get to meet Nora, and give her a {{hug}} in person.  This quilt will provide her with a loving hug from her mom each time she wraps up in it.  This quilt has lots of love sewn into it!  We are hoping this is a happier ending for a sad situation.  This is just the perfect forum to share the sweet details on Nora’s Pixel Quilt.  We know you will all wish her well and the best.

Hello Roseanne and Sue, I am waving…..This is a lovely quilt and you should both be beaming for giving 100 % of yourselves to make this treasured quilt. I try and make quilts for our community but have been off track a lot this year. It always makes me feel so wonderful when I know a quilt is being donated for whatever reason. Thank you, both of you, for doing such a special quilt! Have a magnificent day!
