16 Patch + Framed 4 Patch Tutorial

Another tutorial gem in a baby quilt from MaryQuilts.com (click to go to Mary’s website) is named 16 Patches & Framed 4 Patches.  The last tutorial I shared from MaryQuilts also had a four-patch made from 2.5″ squares.  This entire quilt can be made from one jelly roll – or you can easily cut your own strips from your stash.

We decided to start on this project right away, as we need to add a new baby quilt into our rotation – it will eventually be sold in our Etsy shop.  We chose a jelly roll we had on hand by Northcott called Cosmic Fusion.  We liked it so much each actually had two of the same jelly roll – we even brought them at two different times.  HA!  Following Mary’s tutorial, we sorted the strips into lights and darks after pulling out 17 strips that “stood out somewhat from the others.”  We found there were 17 strips (plus a few more) that had a fireworks design on all of them like this:

We chose these as our frames for the four patch squares.  We then picked out two darks and two lights that all center four patch squares will be made from – they will all match.  Here is the basic steps on how to frame the four patch squares, along with how the strips are cut into 2.5″ sections to make the 16 patches from Mary’s tutorial:

We did not sew four strips together as Mary suggests.  Instead, we sewed a light and a dark together from half the length of each jelly roll strip.  The reason we did this was to mix up the color combinations more than you would get from her way.  It seems this quilt will truly go together very quickly, as we had the four patches cut out, sewn and pressed in less than 30 minutes.

Here are the center squares and a few of them framed.  We will keep you advised on how this project advances along.  I believe this will be another top that will be easy to machine quilt . . . what do you think?

[…] still working on the 16-patch and framed 4-patch quilt.  I just about have all the strips sewed together in sets of four.  Sue will then cut them for me […]
