November 2021 Monthly Color Challenge Block

Here it is, the first Monday in November 2021 already. We have been playing along with Jen’s Monthly Color Challenge blocks. Today we are sharing our November block along with several other blogger friends.

November is Cool for Blueberries

Jen has selected fruits and vegetables as a focus this year. This fun block is really just four nine-patch blocks sewn together. I am really happy with this fabric choice as the batik really represents blueberries quite nicely. Don’t you think?!

Speaking of Blueberries

We did try something new for us – blueberry ice cream. We watch Ree Drummond on Sunday mornings before or during the littles visit. Often, we are annoyed at how she doesn’t clean out her bowl very well – there’s always something left behind. Recently, she made her own version of soft-serve ice cream. What??!! We know three littles (possibly four because Chase can have a wee bit of ice cream, right?) that LOVE blueberries and ice cream. So, what are two aunties to do?!! Make ice cream.

Ree has two different no-churn, soft-serve ice cream recipes. I shared both links above – we made the second one. Honestly, I would make the first one next time because the addition of salt would cut some of the sweetness. This was a fun and EASY way to make any flavor of ice cream. We started the heavy cream to whipping – it takes a while to get stiff peaks. While that was beating away, I mixed the vanilla into the sweetened condensed milk. We added “some” frozen defrosted blueberries and “some” blueberry juice, hoping to get a nice purple hue. Note to self: next time add more of both! Once the whipped cream reached the stiff-peak stage, I folded it into the blueberry mixture. Then I poured the mix into a chilled bread loaf pan. A short five hours later, ta-da! Our own version of no-churn, soft-serve blueberry ice cream. Delicious!

We did give the littles a taste on Sunday. Please note that it was no longer really soft after a few days in the freezer!! It was QUITE FIRM and we had to use a proper ice cream scooper to dish it up. I say make it and eat it right away for the best experience.
