A Big Boy Bed Truck Quilt Finished

Our sweet boy, Dominic, will be three (3!!!) in just two short days.  Man, that boy stole my heart from the get-go in the hospital by grasping my finger.  The pattern, I Love Dirt, was picked up in early 2018, almost before he was born.  The backing was also picked up with him in mind.  We knew at some point he’d need a big boy bed quilt and this blue/gray Grunge-ish fabric would be perfect.  This month, all those thoughts did compile into one big boy finished truck quilt just for him!

Truck of Big Appliqué

This project has landed a few times on the weekly To-Do listings.  Each of the 15 blocks involved a lot of appliqué which took about two weeks.  Here is my favorite block, the reverse side of a dump truck, along with one of the many wheels under the needle.  The ‘dirt’ in the dump truck is a brown polka dot!

Big Boy Truck Borders

It didn’t take long before we had the quilt top complete with cornerstones and two-colored sashing strips.  We took this photo and then wondered if borders might be needed?

Boy Boy quilt top

Yes, indeed.  They will finish off the piece quite nicely and add just a bit more to the width and length.  We are using the same nameless fabric as the backing and binding (why doesn’t the manufacture label the selvage?).  It looks rather Grunge-ish in a mottled print.

Big boy borders

Quilting a Big Boy Truck Quilt

Those 3″ borders really add a nice frame around the whole piece and we think it was a good addition.  Layering on the kitchen island saves our knees and allows me to iron everything nice and flat.  Since the quilt top is bigger than the island in both directions, it hangs over the edges in this shot.

We pop in a few pins here and there, and I’m off to begin the crosshatching.  While I planned on using a different quilting design in my mind for months, Dominic likes the look of diamonds formed by the crosshatch.  Auntie Sue reminded me so her logical request made sense.  Why reinvent the wheel and make it harder than it needs to be?!

Truck Quilting Not Without Issue

Just when you (meaning me) think this should be a snap, a problem arose before the piece was half quilted.  One of my beloved dump truck pieces had been missed in the appliqué process.  After some major crabbiness on my part, Sue came up with the obvious solution that it needed to repaired BEFORE quilting continued.  So, I did repair it.  Before you could blink, it was half quilted and then fully quilted.

Binding also went on without issue, allowing plenty of time for hand stitching it down.  We both relish that final process so much but I hogged all of that enjoyment with a finish on Friday night.  Saturday we washed and dried it and snagged a picture. Now I’ll go over it with a fine-toothed comb for any errant pieces like in the picture above.  A little hand applique and it will be worthy of giving it away to a sweet, sweet boy.

A Big Boy Truck Quilt OMG

For August, this quilt was our focus and our monthly OMG project.  We did complete the goal by adding the borders, layering, quilting, and adding a binding.  I will be linking this up on Patty’s Elm Street Quilts finish linky party before the 31st.  This is also another item on our third quarter finish-along goal list!  Ch-ch-check!  #2020falq3finish

I saw this on Instagram, and had to ask you the name of the pattern. I am so glad you told me about it. I want to make 5 for Christmas, yeah, right. 1 for each grandson.

    Yours turned out so cute.

  2. Boy oh Boy!!! That quilt is a little boy’s dream!! I know my kids were so into trucks when they were little. If I called a truck by the wrong name they would have to correct me. “Mom, that’s a front loader, not a tractor.” Well done on all the applique. This is an adorable quilt finish!

  3. Ann says:

That truck quilt is absolutely adorable! You two must have had so much fun making it, but not as much as Dominic will when he gets to enjoy it. Great job.

  4. Absolutely perfect for big boy bed! Congrats on such a fun finish.

  5. I just love that cross-hatching quilting Roseanne! I haven’t done that in forever, so this is a good reminder. I am sure the quilt sent Dominic over the moon; when I gave Brady his football one last year about this time that was his reaction. Yay for the birthday present, the OMG and the Q3 check!

  6. Wonderful finish and I’m sure it will be loved to bits.

Roseanne – I do like the diamond pattern, and I wouldn’t have thought I would … something about the small nature of the diamonds is a terrific offset to the large diggers! Fabulous. A treasure for a lifetime!

Oh goodness, if that isn’t just the sweetest quilt!! he will adore it.

  9. Wowed! Can you say perfection? Dominic must be in love with his big boy bed quilt. I’m in love with it and the cross hatching is the perfect finish. 😄

I fully know how much work went into this quilt, and the fact you enlarged it as well. It has turned out so great and I love that happy sashing and cornerstones. One to be totally proud of. I have other great nephews who love vehicles. When my sister said well make another one, I kind of turned a deaf ear! Yes the cross hatching does work really well on this one I think as well.

You really outdid yourself on this one! So colorful and just perfect for a little boy that loves dirt! I think all little boys love dirt.
When my son was 4, we had a pile of dirt put in the backyard. I’d have to hose him off every evening before he could set foot in the house!

That quilt is awesome!! I love the primary colors. I’ll have to go find the pattern. One of my grandsons will get it, too.

  19. WOW! What an amazing keepsake for your little man. It would have taken me forever to do all that applique. The colors are so happy and vibrant. Such a lucky boy!

Hello Roseanne! You and Sue did an amazing job on this Big Boy Quilt! I absolutely love it! Would you mind sharing the information as to where you did get the pattern? It is one that I would love to make. Since Carole posted on her blog about depression, I was really having a difficult time and had not sewn anything for weeks. I am once again back to doing what we all love and one of my quilting loves is applique. I can not imagine the look on his face when he opens this present. He is going to just love this special quilt for many long years to come! Plus, I bet many of his friends are going to be jealous! Have a splendid time at the Birthday Party, also! Thank you for sharing and have a superb day!

  21. Fantastic finish on this quilt. You did a wonderful job with the machine quilting and the binding. I just can’t imagine Dominic’s joy when he sees this and his favorite diamonds in the quilting! Lucky boy. Pat yourselves on the back, or do a little huff on the fingernails and polish them on your heart (remember that).

This quilt turned out so adorable! I think the crosshatch quilting looks great! Dominic will love it on his big boy bed!

  34. This quilt is clearly the cutest thing EVER! I hate it when we miss an applique’ section and find it during quilting. It is not uncommon but so frustrating!
