Geo Star Plaid Quilt Top Finished – OMG

Isn’t it nice when everything about a project just falls into place?!!  We were given free fabrics from Debby at Debby Kratovil Quilts and Becca at Pretty Piney sent us the Star-Crossed Plaid pattern for free as her pattern tester.  We carefully chose five of the seven Geo Pop fabrics we received.  From the photo below, you can see that wasn’t an easy decision by any means.  We set about making a baby-sized quilt top soon-to-be called Geo Star Plaid with all the details in an earlier post.

We wanted a slightly more boyish tone to our quilt top.  With that charge, we stuck with background fabrics similar to Becca’s in gray, white, and black.  Before you know it, the first two blocks could be laid out for perusal.  Oh yes, this is coming along nicely and will be fabulous!  I love these Geo Pop fabrics.

Finishing in a four by five pattern, the baby-sized quilt has a block that measures nine inches.  Here is our quilt top, Geo Star Plaid, which measures approximately 36″ x 45″.  The quilt top was altogether by mid-June but, of course, I didn’t know how to quilt it.

Enter Kathleen from Kathleen McMusing with a suggestion.  And a great suggestion at that – why not mimic the suggestion of plaid with straight-line stitching.  It turns out we had the perfect backing in our stash already, so why not get busy?!!  We made this our January OMG project.  We will be linking this on Patty’s Elm Street Quilts January finish linky party, and we thank her for the continued monthly encouragement!

Geo Plaid Plaid

A double-layer of cotton batting was used to give the Geo Star Plaid quilt a nice puffy loft. Handily enough, we had this black and white hashtag fabric in our stash that fit this quilt top perfectly.

Getting my plaid on was my mantra once quilting in earnest began.  I carefully drew out my idea on paper with squares drawn to match the fabric.

The drawing was matched up to the fabric often to ensure I had the pattern down and no mistakes were made.  Oh yes, this was the perfect suggestion as a quilting design.  At least we think so!

Straight-line quilting started in the center and worked toward both edges in that plaid pattern.  Here is a closeup of one of the black patches where the straight-line quilting really shows the plaid pattern well.

Geo Love

A solid black binding finishes off the edges of our Geo Star Plaid quilt quite nicely we think.  Kind of like a frame around a photo.  We thank Becca for sharing this pattern with us, as we’ve greatly enjoyed every step of making this beauty.

Love how it turned out and yes it has a boyish look about it. Interesting putting a double layer of cotton batting in it to make it cozy. I did try that with wool batting for a baby quilt but made it too heavy. Live and learn!

  7. Debby sent the fabrics, Becca provided the pattern and Kathleen suggested the quilting. So tell me again – what did you do? OK, I am being a supreme brat :-p I love the quilt. The plaid effect is neat and totally inspiring. It is perfect and will be loved 🙂 Kudos to you!!!
