Quiet Book Completely Finished

Way, way, way back in December 2018 we started working on a Quiet Book for Dominic and his then soon-to-be sister, Addison.  I saw this project initially on Carol’s website, Just Let Me Quilt.  She made this book for her ‘monkey boys’ (grandchildren) and shared a tutorial that you’ll find by following the link.  Not only will you find the tutorial at that link but you’ll also see some cute monkey boys trying on the ‘shoes’ and tying the laces.

Quiet Process

This Quiet Book entailed a whole lot of appliquéd pieces.  A.whole.lot.  Good thing Sue doesn’t mind prepping this for me, and good thing I enjoy appliqué.  We made a few minor modifications from Carol’s version, but for the most part, it’s very similar.

Of course, we had to start at the beginning (a.k.a. the cover).  The back cover is the opposite of the cover, so that had to be worked on at the same time.

Quiet Skills

As the pages started to come together during the year, I appliquéd as time allowed.  Sometimes there would be LONG stretches without any work; luckily, Sue left me detailed instructions so I didn’t appliqué more than I should have.

Quiet note

I dutifully followed instructions, of course!  One page holds a pocket for a tablet to draw on with a spot for a pencil or pen, while the opposite page will allow for buttons to be added to the shirt front.

Quiet Wrap Up

Sewing the handles together and adding velcro is one of the last steps.  After basting them in place, it was time to determine the layout for the pages.

Quiet pages

The center page has to be the road so that it can lay open with a car in the garage pocket.

Quiet pages2

With right sides together, you sew around each set of pages and then flip them inside out.  A quick top-stitch around all four sides closes up the hole left for inverting and then final assembly can occur.

My Quiet Book

Ta-da!  Here is our version of My Quiet Book.  Thank you, Carol, for the inspiration and tutorial.  It was fun to make and I know our littles will enjoy it greatly.

We’ll share a photo of our little ones enjoying the Quiet Book soon.  We’re also thinking about switching out the shoelaces . . . the pretty turquoise ones look nice but they are slippery.  Maybe we can get a photo like Carol did with her monkey boys trying on the shoes?!  The car pictured on the roads is the Bat Mobile Matchbox edition – would “Bat Girl Auntie Sue” provide any other type of car?!

Almost forgot – we are happily linking up with Finished or Not Friday, Beauties Pageant, and TGIFF!

Our other Linky Parties can be found by clicking the link above or along the sidebar on our website for more quilting fun – check out what our friends are up to.  Like/follow us on our Facebook page and you can share your photos of what you’re working on.  We would love to see them!

The quiet book is fantastic! I still have the one my mom made me, and I remember making one for Anna and Alex, so fun, but yes a LOT of applique!

  9. Yahoo! Can I tell you, I am in my 40s and *still* remember the quiet book I had as a kid. (I’ll have to ask my mom about it … I don’t think she made it for me.) As long as it took to finish this up, I am certain it will be used and loved and perhaps even remembered four decades from now. : )

This looks like a lot of fun to use but maybe a bit difficult to make….but then applique is not my thing. I’m glad you enjoy it though.

That book was definitely a work of love! The link is no longer working since it goes to Craftsy…guess I better fix that. There are so many things I would have done differently on that book, so I get that you’d make some changes. It turned out so awesome! My little Monkey Boys still love it.

What a fun book to make! Love it! And switiching out the shoelaces is probably a good idea. What about stitching them down at the end so they don’t actually come out of the book and get lost?
    Happy Quilting! 🙂

  15. Man those quiet books are monsters to make…but such an enriching experience for those kiddos to explore – in the pages of a book which will no doubt add to later pleasure in reading…
What a great Auntie you are to do this. I’m more than impressed.
    🙂

  16. Well done! So many hours of play time ready in a portable little book 🙂 Thanks for linking to TGIFF this week!

Hello Roseanne, This is a wonderful Quiet Book for the kiddo’s to learn with while having fun! You and Sue did a great job in all of your selections, I like the bright shoe laces yet understand that they should not be slippery while they are learning how to tie. Thank you for sharing another one of your fabulous projects! Have a spectacular day!
