CUTE Snowman Table Topper Finished

Back in JULY I saved this photo with the label “Next squirrel project – Vicki”.  Sue and I both knew it was going to be made . . . it was just a matter of getting it on the docket with full attention.  Vicki at Vicki’s Crafts and Quilting shared this cute and adorable table topper during a Christmas in July blog hop.  We love all things Christmas so I was thrilled to pop around the hop, so to speak.  Vicki shared a tutorial on how to make this table topper as well, and I just knew I wanted to drop everything darn thing and make it right this minute.  NOW!

There was no way in H this squirrel is happening back in July because it would have interrupted the cutest quilt ever for a sweet girl (Cind-erella – Her Carriage Awaits).  I showed the photo to Sue and said how of these do you think we need to make?  She said a dozen.  WHAT??!!??  I was thinking six but then she started naming some people who would definitely like it.

Potential Squirrel Snowman Forgotten

After spending some time with the littles the rest of the summer and Fall, we decided to get slightly more serious about the squirrel project.  A hexagon shape is just six triangle shapes but we didn’t have a large ruler.  Or did we?!  Sure, most rulers have the 60° marking on them along with other common ones.  So Sue cut a 9″ strip of fabric and I gave it a shot; after all, what did I have to lose?!

I lined up the cut straight-edge of the fabric with the 60° marking on the ruler and cut carefully.  Hmm.  That looked right so I cut five more equilateral triangles – sweet!

Snowman Moving Forward

In her tutorial, Vicki went a different direction with stenciling her snowflakes.  We chose to appliqué them but first we had to select the perfect size.  The snowflakes are free templates I found searching on the internet and then I printed different sizes to see which worked best.  Appliqué started with a snowman and snowflake in alternating triangles and finished quickly!

Next, it was time to add a ‘carrot’ nose for additional buttonholing.  We quickly layered it up with some red backing that reminds me of peppermint and candy canes.

Quilting went very quickly!  In the hour Sue was tutoring a student in math, I got the top quilted and binding added.  A simple stipple was done in the center and around/into each snowflake with my FMQ foot.  Then, I switched to a walking foot to outline each snowman head and to stitch-in-the-ditch on each side of the red/white border.  Finally, I added two straight-line rows of stitching in the dotted border to mimic the width of the inner border. 

Handing tacking the binding down during my lunch time and our top was complete.  Ta-da – a finished Snowman Table Topper.  We hope Sue’s sister is as thrilled with it as we are.
