September OMG I Wish You A Merry Quilt Finish

We have been making a monthly quilting goal thanks to Patty at Elm Street Quilts.  Patty hosts a monthly linky event where you state your goal in a post and link it to her website.  At the end of the month, you return and post another message if you have met the goal.  There are a variety of prizes from many different sponsors.  The prizes are very nice, and I appreciate the sponsors very much.  But the motivation of making this monthly goal itself is what I need to get projects complete!  Up this month is the I Wish You A Merry quilt from last year.

Merry Beginnings

Last August 1st we joined a mystery quilt along called I Wish You A Merry.  The the block patterns were released approximately every two weeks which was a nice pacing for us.  We picked this fabulous Christmas fabric from Moda called Red Dot, Green Dash.

I loved these fabrics then and still love them today.  How can a project go bad with a fabulous beginning like this?!  Different designers shared their talents with the release of each block, along with tips about making it.

Merry Making Blocks

We followed along until nearly the end of the QAL.  Blocks were made and these are a few of my favorites:

The time was approaching to decide how to quilt our flimsy.  We were a three blocks from the finish line, and I got cold feet.  Not uncommon for me in November, this time it was quilter’s paralysis.  Maybe it wasn’t the time to be finished.  Maybe I needed to learn to have confidence with FMQing.  At any rate, it wasn’t to be finished until September 2018.

Merry September OMG

We set our goal for September to get this quilt finished.  Completely quilted and bound and ready for the Christmas Eve party at our house.  From April until mid-September this is what it looked like.  It has been layered, with backing from the estate sale where we found some other fabrics.  I continue to think that older crafter would be happy to see her fabric used in such a happy fashion. 

A Merry Finish

For this quilt top, I tried a more dense stippling stitch.  We chose a navy sparkly binding to pull out that center angel block.  In this shot below you can see the stippling as well as the navy binding:

And here is the finished quilt top, both the front and reverse side.  The inside of the stars and the angel wings were not quilted because they were made with a glittery fabric.  You can see the star outlines in the picture on the left.

With any luck, we will have a nice chilly Christmas Eve.  A fire in the fireplace and a snuggly Christmas quilt to rest under or on top of sounds great to me.  Especially with our expanding family to share our blessings with, and midnight church service to celebrate the reason for the season.
