August OMG – We Finished UFO Garden Gate

This year has been designated the year to finish up 12 unfinished objects (UFO).  The number 12 was selected so that we could earn our PHD from fellow quilter, blogger, and friend, Gail at Quilting Gail.  We, meaning me, have been very remiss lately as most of the remaining finishes require just quilting.  They are already layered and are awaiting some inspiration from me to get ‘er done.  So come ‘h’ or high water, one is getting done.

UFO Inspiration from OMG

Sew, this inspiration decision was basically up to me.  I just needed to pick one project to complete.  Just one and then commit to a quilting design.  Okay.  I picked Garden Gate.  Our Elm Street Quilt August OMG was to finish the Garden Gate quilting (somehow) along with the binding.

Here is what Garden Gate looked like the last time I shared anything about it.  That was in October 2017.  Since then it has been layered and waiting, and waiting, and waiting.  It is much more patient than I am, but really what choice does it have.  At least I didn’t stuff it in that closet it is hanging in front of!

An UFO Decision

Sew, I made a decision!  Woot woot.  Now just follow through and get it complete in 30 days.  That is very doable, don’t you think?!  I decided to give the FMQ floppy feathers a try.  I shared a post about this earlier, but the shout out to Beth at Cooking Up Quilts bears repeating.  Her tutorial truly gave me the inspiration and confidence to give this pattern a try.

A UFO and OMG Nearly Finished

Resolving several challenges with breaking thread was the tough part, and then the quilting went fairly smoothly.  My feathers are not of uniform size or shape, and the stitches are not either – plenty of room for improvement.  Handily enough, who really notices the quilting once it is all washed.

These two pictures reflects the backing and binding, the right after washing.  I’m happy to see that the binding looks like stripes which is one of my favorite looks.  We still love sewing the binding down by hand.

Garden Gate Is Finished Indeed

Here is the finished quilt in all of its glory – ta-da!  The quilt has been washed and dried; it’s all quilty and squishy.  You know what I mean?!!

Did I hear you say you wanted another shot of the finished product??  Well, here you go!  It’s draped on a porch chair (and I thought of you, Wendy!) in a not-very-glam shot.
