Receiving Blankets – A UFO Finish

Woot woot – an April UFO finish.  Back in the 90s a coworker wore a quilted jacket that I admired.  I decided I was going to make one for myself.  I found the pattern, gathered some favorite fabrics, cut them into the right sized squares and started hand quilting them.  The jacket required three separate pieces – one for the back and two for the front sections including the sleeves.  Here is an example of one of the front sections.

Receiving Blankets Instead of a Jacket!

I layered the sections with a thin white flannel and a peach colored solid.  The alternate blocks were made from a natural muslin, and the quilting was just a simple X.

Fast forward a few years and a few moves and we have ourselves a nice UFO.  It has languished in the closet or a drawer for a good while.  Thanks to Gail and her PHD (projects half done) goal, this project was unearthed.  Unearthed and finally finished.  While it isn’t ever going to be a jacket, I think three receiving blankets might be a better use of these pieces.

All of these blankets need a good washing as they are so wrinkled from being stored for so long.  We added a slightly darker Iced Peach binding on two of them.  They were some leftovers from Postcard from Sweden quilt but it wasn’t quite enough for all three.  The third blanket was given a beige binding, and all were hand tacked down.  Now to find a good home for them – if anyone knows someone who could use them we would welcome the suggestion!

What adorable blankets! They will come in handy for someone.

  3. I think that is a wonderful use for those awesome ufo’s. Way to go! 😊

  4. Great idea to rethink the jacket. While it may have been beautiful in the 90s, you might not have received quite the same reaction this year. However, these sure are pretty receiving blankets. Some new moms will enjoy using them. Some ideas of where to give them: abused women’s shelter, home for teenage moms, ask your church for local needs, foster child program.

  5. Great idea making those into receiving blankets! Congratulations on another finish!

Doesn’t it feel great when we make something new out of something old….and the bonus is it didn’t cost anything.

Great idea turning those in to receiving blankets. All things are usable, just need to find the right use!
