I Spy With A Little Help From Our Friends
We have been blessed. In so many ways, but most recently by several quilter friends helping us with fabrics for an I Spy quilt. I mentioned that we are starting an I Spy quilt for Dominic, but that we were short quite a few blocks. We only had approximately 36 blocks, and that even included duplicates!
Several friends reached out and asked if they might send us some of their stash?! Chris from Chris Knits Sews, Michele from 3 Poodles and a Nana, and Terri from Quilting Nonnie all sent fabric:

Oh I Spy with a little help from our friends . . . we get by with a little help from our friends . . . with help from our friendsssssssssss. Anyone else thinking of the Beatles song now?
A Little I Spy Layout #1
Sue trimmed up the fabric pieces to our 4.5″ squares and cleared off the design wall. The Jigsaw and t-shirts are temporarily put on hold. We want to make a fairly good sized quilt, so she laid out the blocks in a 10 x 12 pattern.
Here is the first random layout. She took a color picture and a black/white picture just to see how the tone/contrast was balanced. Of course, we could see all the dark colors together in that bottom right corner without the b/w version confirming it. Since the design wall is right outside my bedroom, I walk by it several times a day. I will definitely be moving pieces around throughout the week.
I Spy Process
Once all the squares are arranged in a pleasing array, I will start sewing. Don’t you think this would be the perfect leader/ender project? While working on the other items on this week’s to-do list, these rows will nearly sew themselves together. Before you know it, I’ll be quilting this puppy and pointing out the skunk, shark, football, and red chili to Dominic. I can’t wait!

I love how I can do a value shot with my phone. In my previous quilting career I had to use the red filter with fabrics to view the value. With a mono photo I can study the contrasts a lot easier. Sometimes technology is wonderful! Can’t wait to see your final layout.
Yes, it will be a perfect leader & ender! And if (on a rare occasion) you mix up a block – it’ll still be perfect! What wonderful quilting friends you have! Happy Quilting!

Yes I am thinking of the Beatles! 🙂 I am impressed that you took a black and white photo. Way to go! I can totally see the darker areas. I bet if you walk past the design wall enough times you will have those blocks arranged just perfectly! This is going to be so fun to watch! 🙂
That’s going to be a fun quilt. It’s great that you can have it on your design wall and keep looking and rearranging. You’ll know when it’s ready to be sewn together. Looking forward to seeing the finish!
