April Bee Hive Block – Ripples
In the IG (Instagram) Honey Bee group we joined this year, Jen is the Queen for the month of April. The block she choose for all of us to make is called Ripple. She fussy cut the center block and sent it to all of us, and the end result is going to be a quilt for her daughter.
Ripples Abound
Jen gave us some guidelines for her fabric requirements, but they are very loose and wide ranging. She would like white-on-white or low-volume whites for the background. The other fabrics need to coordinate with the cactus block that she sent to us. Those colors include black, gray, teal, mint greens, corals, pinks, etc. As long as it works with the cactus fabric, we are good to go. That’s a lot of freedom! Jen sent us these cacti center blocks.
We picked out some fabric and Sue got out the Bloc-Loc to trim the HSTs.
Ripples Choices
After the 72 HSTs were all trimmed, we tried a few different layouts. We put them on the island and then played around with them every time we walked through the kitchen.
I started sewing them together but of course I enjoyed some ripping time as well. I managed to get one of the corner pieces sewn on backwards, and one whole row upside down. Geez! But on Thursday, all three blocks were sent on their merry way to Jen along with a couple of mini charm packs.
I didn’t notice until I went to put them in the envelope for mailing but two blocks had the exact same fabric in the corner. Oh well, I’m sure no one will notice that when they are mixed in with the other blocks!

that’s nice to have the centre fabric in the bee blocks all the same
Oh wow, this makes so much sense. Super cute too. Love how this will ensure continuity among blocks.
I’m with you on the HSTs and bloc loc is my friend too. Sending mine off today, since she is the queen in my May hive also.
Your blocks look great!
Love these with their cacti foci. I’m sure this quilt will cause ripples when it’s done. xx
Hi Roseanne, Cute cactus fabric as the focus on these cute blocks! That is a lot of HSTs and they look pretty small. There always seems to be some ripping involved!
Hello Roseanne, This does look like a fun block to make. Like you have pointed out, it would take awhile to create all of the HST and then decide on a layout and make sure none of the same fabrics were touching. But in the end, this is a great bright fun block and when all the blocks are put together, it will be a stunning quilt! I am sure no one will notice, especially once the blocks are mixed throughout the quilt that the two corners are the same. Besides it is a very pretty fabric! I hope that you and Sue continue to have great times quilting every day! Smiles, hugs and waves are being sent your way!
This promises to be one very cute quilt! Can’t wait to see the finish!
Happy Quilting! 🙂
Me too, Gail! Since it’s going to be made by Jen I’ll have to see if she’ll let me share it when it’s finished! ~smile~ Roseanne
I know that ripping well. Spent quite a bit of time doing that yesterday. Your blocks are very nice!
Cute blocks! Love that cactus fabric; so fun!
